In times of great change - therapy can shine a light on the path forward

If you’ve been experiencing big changes in your life, be it moving, a new job, divorce, graduation, retirement, or the loss of a loved one, seeing a therapist may be helpful both during and after these challenging times. I have over 5 years experience working as a therapist, and I’ve lived through many big changes myself! I offer care for people ages 16 and up who are dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, or struggling with their sense of self (feeling like they’ve lost their identity). The main methods I use in sessions are hypnotherapy, gestalt therapy-based approaches, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, and client-centered therapy.

In Your Greatest Moments of Stress There Is Also the Opportunity For Great Change

I have worked as a mental health care professional for over two decades. In that time, I’ve seen many people struggling to figure out why their lives feel so hard, why they can’t just “get over things and get on with life”. Quite often the reason is because it’s nearly impossible to figure it all out on your own. We are social beings, and even the most introverted person still needs human connection. In moments of crisis, that’s when many people finally feel like it’s time to see a therapist - which is where I come in.

You Were Never Meant to Go Through Life Without Support If I could go back and give myself one piece of advice it would be this:

“Feeling alone doesn’t mean you have to stay that way. If you are open to the possibility that someone can understand you, then that can actually happen.”

I’ve been where you are, I have dealt with my own struggles and spent a lot of time trying to untangle my life before I finally saw a mental health professional.

It’s my hope that now as a therapist, I can pay forward that amazing support. If you want to feel clearer about your life and figure out what may need to change, I’m here to help. I’m a registered psychotherapist, I’ve been working for several years and I love what I do.

When You Begin to Embrace Change, That is When Your Life Transforms

As a therapist, so much of what I do is supporting people with the impacts of change and stress, be it anxiety, loss and grief, shame, trauma, depression, or relationship dilemmas. Personally, I understand how hard it can be when you see big changes on the horizon in your life and feeling like it is difficult to navigate combining emerging stressors. Learning to thoughtfully consider, accept and actively embrace change can help to make life less stressful, and you’ll find yourself more grounded and secure as you navigate different transitions. Addressing the feelings that come up with change can take time, but getting support in this area can be transformational.

Counselling is not about being fixed, it’s about realizing you were never broken to begin with.

You may have inner emotional wounds from past hurts, but you are far from being “broken”. As a therapist, I’ll support you in exploring the areas of life that are causing you discomfort, and we can adjust what’s needed, to ease your pain. I’ve been working in mental health for over 10 years and while I work with a number of approaches, I mainly utilize two forms of trauma therapy with my clients. Both EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy are able to help work on the deeper processes that can interrupt your life.

Life is full of changes, starting university, switching jobs, moving out for the first time, navigating relationships, or figuring out who you are outside of the expectations of your family. These transitional times can be exciting, but they can also bring anxiety, shame or even anger. You might feel like you should have everything under control, but the truth is, no one teaches us how to handle the big shifts in life. That’s where therapy comes in.

As a psychotherapist, I work with young people and professionals who are facing grief, major life changes, anxiety, depression, insecurity, and self-doubt. I also help folks who are adjusting to life on their own for the first time and balancing school, work, and relationships. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of yourself, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. The great thing about therapy is that it’s the one time that you get to really just explore what’s going on for you, and not have to take care of anyone else.

Ever felt like you need to hide parts of yourself just to fit in or keep others happy? When you have to be “on”, you can end up feeling drained, worn out, and like nobody wants to know the real you. I’ve been there myself, and I learned that having one person you can truly be yourself around can make all the difference. If you’ve ever felt like you need to shrink yourself or pretend everything’s fine when it’s not, let’s talk. When we are together, you can just be you, say exactly what you’re feeling, and figure out who you are without worrying about being judged.

I support teens and adults navigating their identity, anxiety, depression, complicated relationships (including polyamory and non-monogamy), and big or sudden life changes. Together, we’ll unravel the things keeping you stuck so you can step into your future feeling clear, confident, and self-assured.

Back in the mid-90’s, I was a long haired, Nirvana loving teen… I had a close circle of friends, but I often felt awkward and struggled with anxiety and depression. I tried to figure out how to escape these feelings, but I felt trapped by them.

As high school drew to a close, many of my friends had plans for College or University, but I knew that path wasn’t quite right for me. As fate would have it, I met a few people my age who were travelling instead of getting a job or going off to College, and I decided to travel. It felt like a big risk at the time, but in hindsight, travelling alone forced me to face my fears and I began to gain confidence and trust myself a bit more.

Even though I was starting to get glimpses of a different way of life, I returned home because I didn’t know what else to do. Once back, the old feelings of anxiety and depression returned and still feeling uncertain, I went to College.

Along the way, I was introduced to back-country canoeing and met someone from Germany who changed my life. We exchanged a series of letters where I poured out my heart and shared my frustrations about the world.

I can help you get to the root of what’s keeping you up at night

Something that doesn’t get talked about enough, when it comes to therapy, is that the simple act of sharing your worries, regrets, and struggles with someone else, out loud, can in itself create great relief.

As a therapist, I offer support for people (ages 13 years and older) struggling with many different challenges, such as regret, shame, anxiety, fears, phobias, grief, big life changes, and learning how to navigate challenging relationships. Much of my job is to listen with both my head, and my heart, to your story. People come to me with big burdens they’ve been carrying, regret about actions, hidden shame about behaviour during a moment of anger, or grief about the loss of a loved one and the way they may have left things.

Living with unresolved trauma can be a burden so large that it colours every aspect of your world. It’s a big step to even recognize (or hope) that life could be different with therapy.

Before I became a psychotherapist, I worked as a Kinesiologist for over a decade. It was from helping people recover from physical injuries, that I became aware of how much the emotional state of a person can influence their health and wellbeing. I saw how depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder could impact a person’s physical recovery from an injury or surgery. I also witnessed that if someone had the right social support, or if their overall mood and outlook on life was relatively balanced, their physical outcomes were often more positive. These observations impacted me deeply, and I realized that I could do more for people in the field of mental health, than working only with the physical side of things. As a psychotherapist, I specialize in a form of therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy which is clinically proven to be especially helpful for those who carry trauma from their past. I also am trained in Existential Therapy, Jungian Counselling, and other evidence based mental health modalities for individuals and couples to offer support for whatever you may be struggling with.

You May Feel Like You Have To Prove Your Worth, But You Are Worthy, Just As You Are

As a therapist, I’ve seen so many good people, who believe they are not “good enough”. A big part of my job is helping you to see who you are through a more compassionate set of eyes, to begin trusting your inner voice, and to believe in yourself.

I take a holistic integrative approach to therapy. I recognize that we are all walking our own path, at a different pace, with different ways of getting by. Therapy is about finding what works for you. I utilize various approaches to support your healing, including, EMDR therapy, mindfulness, CBT, and Polyvagal informed approaches. I understand that therapy is just as much as what’s happening in your body as it is your mind.

I am passionate about trauma and have trained as a Clinical Traumatologist and EMDR therapist. I offer various options to be able to heal and process PTSD and other trauma conditions.  I also provide clinical supervision to other Registered Psychotherapists who are looking to expand their skill set.

I’m a Therapist Who Specializes in Trauma-informed Therapy

If you’ve felt misunderstood or dismissed when talking about your pain and stress with friends or even professionals, I want you to know that I will take your struggles seriously. My focus as a therapist is specifically around supporting people with various kinds of trauma, including childhood trauma, abusive relationships, sexual abuse and assault, workplace incidents, narcissistic abuse, trauma from accidents, long term neglect, or single traumatic incidents. I have extensive training in a type of therapy that was designed for trauma, PTSD and complex PTSD, called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing). This type of therapy has been transformational for many people living with the daily impacts of trauma.

I also have a very special spot in my heart for parents who are doing their best to heal from their pasts while also giving their all to being good caregivers to their children. I am a mother myself (I have a blended multi-racial family with 5 children) and offer therapy for parents. I have taken Gottman parenting training to support parents and caregivers of children and youth.

Seeing A Therapist Is a Time to Be Truly Heard and Understood

Being listened to, and actually feeling understood seems to be a rare thing these days. Sitting with a therapist who isn’t distracted and is actively there just for you may feel unusual at first but that’s the thing with therapy, it’s not your everyday experience, it is a time just for you. In our sessions, we start from your current point of need, and together, we look at the challenges you are facing to improve both your inner and outer worlds.

I support individuals dealing with trauma, anxiety, stress, burnout, relationship issues, and self-esteem/self-confidence. I am here to provide acceptance, curiosity, and fresh insights into what may seem unchangeable in your life. The top mental health modalities I use in sessions are: EMDR, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Parts Work (Internal Family Systems (IFS) informed). I am also trained in and may integrate these supports into our sessions if needed: CBT, self-compassion, mindfulness & somatic techniques.

I’ve been working in the field of mental health for many years and have traveled my own wellness journey too. One thing I’ve noticed is how helpful having an outside perspective can be when you’re feeling stuck. This applies to so many aspects of life, from struggling with unwanted habits and behaviours (from eating disorders to substance use) to trying to rediscover yourself after a big change has happened (like becoming a parent, changing jobs, or graduating). I’m a Registered Psychotherapist and I support people who are dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, eating disorders, perinatal mental health, and those who are looking for a way forward in life - one with more meaning and purpose.
